Posted by: ondert I was wondering the same thing and saw this; Can someone try it because I sold my unit and planning to buy smaller? I spent some time playing Total War: Arena inside a Windows 10 VM with Parallels on my MBP 2017 & RX580 in a. The GPU shows as Parallels Display Adaptor, the window for the VM is visually on a display physically plugged into the GPU, and Activity Monitor's GPU activity shows the load running on the 580. The FPS is pretty terrible (playable, but not pretty) and the Parallels graphics driver doesn't support chunks of DirectX 11 - - so some games just won't think of running - Sea of Thieves, for example, collapsed with a 'Shader Model 3 not supported', iirc. Still, it was more than I ever expected Parallels to run. 🙂 YMMV, of course! Posted by: thiagon Hi guys, anyone tested this further?

Turns out there may be a solution in the form of an external graphics card. Many Windows laptops released in 2016 come with a Thunderbolt 3 port that natively supports external graphics options; that’s the entire premise behind the. That same port works on the new MacBook Pro. The caveat is that – for now – you may have to install Windows. Redditor was able to get his new 13-inch MacBook Pro to run an Nvidia card using the external GPU dock, but only after installing Windows via BootCamp (as far as we can tell, they didn’t try to use a virtual machine like Parallels).
Some may have rightly questioned my decision to, but such a choice pays off when running more than one virtual machine. In that case, the more RAM the better, since you must individually assign each instance with resources from your overall system pool. It also means that will be well-suited for virtualization. Just be sure to get as much RAM as you can, since it.

I wonder if this could be used to pass through to Windows. My eGPU is working fine in OS X but not in Windows 10 - if I could use Parallels then that might be a way of getting things working in Win10. Depends on what you're about to achieve. The Parallels 11 Windows graphics driver only supports up to DirectX 10.1 so everything needing the already 6 year old DirectX 11 will fail. Unfortunately VMware Fusion 8 is also stuck with DirectX 10. Depending on what Macbook you're using you should be able to get the eGPU up and running natively though.
