Kiffin is 35-21 as a head coach and has won national championships as a coordinator, but he nevertheless finds ways to go out in dramatic and/or controversial fashion wherever he is. At FAU, he takes over a program that hasn't had a winning record since 2008.
Quarterback Logan Woodside, now a senior, will deserve more attention than undoubtedly he’ll receive. The receiver corps is the league’s best. Cody Thompson in particular has developed a smooth rapport with his quarterback, giving this passing game a reliable target with the ability to stretch defenses downfield. The offensive line loses three starters, two with all-conference recognition, but after an unsteady 2016 season might even improve behind an altered cast. The defense does not have the MAC’s best line, nor the best linebackers, nor even the stingiest secondary. But there are no weaknesses across the board; this defense may lay an egg during the regular season — these things do happen — but should be viewed as another strength, not a weakness. So, the question: Can Toledo follow in Western Michigan’s footsteps and reach a New Year’s Six bowl?
GAMES OF THE YEAR Western Michigan at Southern California, Sept. Let’s see how one of the MAC’s top teams fares against Sam Darnold and friends. Central Michigan at Kansas, Sept. If CMU is better than I expect — take comfort in the fact I’m always wrong — it’s not hard to picture the Chippewas going 3-0 against Power Five competition: Kansas, at Syracuse a week later and at Boston College on Sept. Tulsa at Toledo, Sept.
NIU left after the 1985–86 season. The joined the conference in 1992.
The latest team previews and projected conference standings for the Mid-American Conference (MAC) for the upcoming college football season. The favorites to win the 2017 MAC title feature a couple of familiar faces in Toledo, Western Michigan and Ohio, but Miami is a team to watch after winning six of its final seven games last year. The RedHawks feature 14 players on Athlon’s 2017 All-MAC team, which is tied with Western Michigan for the most of any team in the league.
There are proven talents on both sides of the ball, but there are still areas of concern — the new QBs, the running game, the pass defense, to name a few. A middle-of-the pack finish in the MAC West would be a success. Eastern Michigan Eagles Eastern Michigan played in its first bowl game in 29 years last year, a major step forward for a program known mostly for its futility. Was it a one-year mirage or a sign of what is to come?

The potential is there. Now the Rockets must meet those expectations.
The expectations are clear: Toledo anticipates winning the rowdy West Division and then taking the MAC as a whole, achievements that would place the team in the thick of the New Year’s bowl race. They have a quarterback, Logan Woodside, with the numbers to rival any at his position in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Each positional unit — from quarterback through special teams — ranks easily in the top half of the conference, most among the top three. Lester inherits a roster that had completely bought into his predecessor. As long as the players also buy in to him, there’s enough talent to compete for another league title in 2017. Northern Illinois Huskies Head coach Rod Carey enters a pivotal year, as some of the luster of NIU’s BCS Orange Bowl berth is starting to wear off after the Huskies’ school-record run of eight straight bowl appearances came to a disappointing end with a 5–7 record. Even though a third straight season with a series of injuries at the quarterback position is unlikely, the in-house candidates lack the star power or dual-threat ability of past signal callers.

NCAA Football 2017 Season MAC West Preview The Broncos have some significant personnel losses to address, but new coach Tim Lester still has enough talent to guide Western Michigan to a division title. The Broncos’ top competition in the West is Toledo, which is led by a dynamic offense and senior quarterback Logan Woodside. The new season of fantasy college football kicks off Saturday August 26 at Toledo Rockets A schedule that includes Tulsa at home and the Miami Hurricanes on the road presents its challenges, but the Rockets have the league’s best quarterback in Logan Woodside, a tremendous depth and talent at wide receiver and a stable of productive running backs that never seems to thin. The defense doesn’t have to be great for this team to succeed; another middle-of-the pack finish in the MAC stats should suffice. The Rockets have won at least nine game five times in the last six seasons yet have not played in the MAC Championship Game since 2004. That drought should end in 2017.

But the Bulls will only go as far as Jackson will take them, and Holley might also be the Golden Flashes’ best running back and receiver. Stay healthy, Thomas Woodson. I want to see what you’re capable of. You too, Shaq Vann.
Brogan Roback, Eastern Michigan. Roback will be at his best yet as a senior. Gus Ragland, Miami (Ohio). Ragland avoids interceptions, tossing just one in 179 attempts last fall, and has a way with winning, going 6-1 as the starter, so he’s easily one of the MAC’s best. Ryan Graham, Northern Illinois. Graham must stay healthy should NIU hope to regain its stride in the West Division. Riley Neal, Ball State.

With a favorable cross-division schedule and perhaps the best group of skill players in the conference, the Eagles are C-USA contenders. They're not the favorite, but it seems clear that the dark days of 2012-14 (4-32 record) are well in the past.

When he gets rolling — and stays upright — Woodson is a crucial and potentially irreplaceable piece of the puzzle for Terry Bowden and the Zips. Quinton Maxwell, Ohio. Maxwell should be the starter for Frank Solich, but the staff did bring in junior-college transfer Nathan Rourke for a reason.
Toledo and WMU are in front of the pack, but the other four in this division could be taking each other out for bowl eligibility. All of them have a chance at it. (You can’t really say that about the East.) How these teams looked in 2016 Only two were particularly decent on both sides of the ball, and the home of MACtion didn’t have nearly as many high-octane offenses as its reputation suggests it should.
